Original Cut Flower pieces for Herefordshire Art Week

I thought I’d keep a record of the work that I put together for Herefordshire Art Week 2023 that was exhibited at Aardvark Books in Brampton Bryan. This is a series of my ‘cut flower’ pieces - with the species being individually painted by hand (drawn in ink and then coloured with watercolour) and then cut out, ever so slowly and carefully, using a scalpel.

I wrote out a little blurb about each piece for the exhibition which I will list here with

The Hydrangeas by Alice Savery (Alice Draws the Line)

1. The Hydrangeas

Drawn in ink, painted with watercolour. Hand cut and arranged in an origami vase.

These grow in profusion in my parents garden. I selected these blooms from the masses to study and preserve as artwork.

£385 plus postage (or free collection from studio) measures 41.5cm square, 2cm deep.

The Peonies and Friends by Alice Savery (Alice Draws the Line)

2. The Peonies & Friends

Drawn in ink, painted with watercolour. Hand cut and arranged in an origami vase.

Some of my favourite colours and shapes are found in these blooms. In particular the perennial cornflowers (Centaurea montana) their structure and combination of colours are some of my favourite to draw and enjoy.

£385 plus postage (or free collection from studio) measures 41.5cm square, 2cm deep.

Brampton Grasses by Alice Savery (Alice Draws the Line)

3. Brampton Grasses

Drawn in ink, painted with watercolour. Hand cut.

These grasses were collected in the village here (Brampton Bryan) on a lockdown walk. I tried to see how many different varieties I could find as I walked. On my return to the studio (located just down the road, at the crossroads), I studied each one in ink and watercolour, before going on to cut each one out by hand and arrange them as you see here.

Sweet Peas from the garden, I thought you might like them by Alice Savery (Alice Draws the Line)

4. Sweet Peas from the garden, I thought you might like them

Drawn in ink, painted with watercolour. Hand cut and arranged in an origami vase.

Is there anything nicer than growing your own sweet peas, cutting them and giving them to a friend? This is what these are. Originally drawn from home grown sweet peas and representing that gift from one friend to another.

A Riot of Summer Colour by Alice Savery (Alice Draws the Line)

5. A Riot of Summer Colour

Drawn in ink, painted with watercolour. Hand cut and arranged in an origami vase.

These blooms feel joyful to me. Full of summer colour and energy and happiness, bright and zingy blooms of fun and laughter.

Summer Sunflowers by Alice Savery (Alice Draws the Line)

6. Summer Sunflowers

Drawn in ink, painted with watercolour. Hand cut and arranged in an origami vase.

The cheeriness of Sunflowers - with their warmth and feel of sunshine. These blooms were picked by a neighbour and given to me to draw. The giving of flowers and the enjoyment of them in a vase in the home feels like a special type of kindness to me.

SOLD

Purple Posy by Alice Savery (Alice Draws the Line)

7. Purple Posy

Drawn in ink, painted with watercolour. Hand cut and arranged in an origami vase.

The majority of these were initially drawn as part of a project I did where I drew a bouquet of flowers every month for a year, using species that were in bloom this month. These were from the March bouquet and grown just outside Leintwadine, some in a polytunnel and others outdoors. Documenting seasonal blooms in pen and ink is hugely enjoyable for me.

£385 plus postage (or free collection from studio) measures 41.5cm square, 2cm deep.

Thank you to all those that have purchased one of these pieces. Should you be interested in one of the remaining few, do please let me know. You can contact me here
