Squally at first becoming good later… the soundtrack behind the seascape
Squally at first, becoming good later
Acrylic on canvas. Canvas measures 100cm x30cm (slightly bigger in the frame).
Currently available at The Courtyard in Hereford, (closed Sundays) until 14th July.
I’ve been really playing with techniques for this exhibition, working on this one with very watered down acrylic to work as closely to watercolour as I could initially to create the background to the lettering before covering that up to work on the top layers. This is a mixture of gelli plate and templates to create the waves. Moving from dark to light as the squall passes.
I listened to music while working on these as well as listening to the shipping forecast (a lot!) and sea shanties (mainly by the Fisherman’s Friends and The Longest Johns) a completely different one of my favourites is Chopin’s raindrop prelude (Op.28 no.15) which to me is depicted this piece.
I recommend listening to it loudly- you hear the rain/ squall coming, hit and you are in the middle of it and then move away and it brightens to finish. It nearly always makes me cry I find it so moving- but that is this piece- the squall moving away and becoming good later.
